PUNE: A Mhasoba chowk resident got 22 stitches on his head after he was attacked with a sickle and a brick and was robbed of his gold chain worth Rs2 lakh at Dattawadi slum around 7am on Thursday.
The victim, Mahendra Chaudhary, who heads the Gangeshwar Mahadeo temple committee, is recuperating at a private hospital. He was walking his way to the temple as part of a daily routine to offer prayers when two suspects attacked him from behind and snatched his chain before fleeing away.
Chaudhary identified the two attackers and shared their names with the police. Sub-inspector Chandrakant Kamth of the Dattawadi police said, "Chaudhary's condition was serious after the attack, but he is now stable."
Chaudhary (49) said, "The two men came from behind and attacked me."
